Senate race Airey-Wilson is waging against incumbent Democrat Sen. Eric Coleman. Coleman -- who said he has asked for and not received the endorsement of Perez, the city's most powerful Democrat -- said he doesn't plan to make an issue out of Airey-Wilson's involvement in the corruption probe or the fact that she, like Perez, hired a city contractor to work on her home. Sean Arena, head of the city's Democratic town committee, said he won't make an issue out of it, either....

Still, the campaign had been relatively peaceful, stoking hope that Angola may finally be on the way to peace and prosperity. But it campaigned on promises to keep transforming a nation destroyed by civil war, and was expected to retain control of parliament. Dos Santos beat Savimbi in the first round of the 1992 presidential election, but Savimbi refused to accept defeat and returned to war before the second round could be held.
